Introduction

The Polish Grid Infrastructure (NGI) has been built within the PL-Grid project (2009 – 2012) to provide the Polish scientific community with an IT platform based on computer clusters, enabling research in various domains of e-Science. The infrastructure supports scientific investigations by integrating experimental data and results of advanced computer simulations carried out by geographically distributed research teams.

PLGrid infrastructure enables Polish scientists carrying out scientific research based on the simulations and large-scale calculations using the computing clusters as well as provides convenient access to distributed computing resources.

Since March 2010 Polish Grid Infrastructure has been a part of a pan-European infrastructure built in the framework of the EGI (European Grid Initiative), which aims to integrate the national Grid infrastructures into a single, sustainable, production infrastructure. PLGrid infrastructure is both compatible and interoperable with existing European and worldwide Grid frameworks.

Creation of the PLGrid Infrastructure not only extended the amount of computational resources provided to the Polish scientific community by over 230 TFlops of computing power and more than 3600 TB of storage space, but – more importantly – facilitated effective use of these resources by providing innovative grid services and end-user tools, as well as continuous technical support.

To support grid users and administrators, the set of advanced tools and services has been developed, which could be used e.g. to organization of computational experiments, visualization of applications' results and grid resources management. The end user, or the application developer, can use these modern tools, which will make the complexity of the e-infrastructure transparent.

All these achievements as well as the scientific results obtained by the Partners of the PL-Grid project have been described in the book: “Building a National Distributed e-Infrastructure – PL-Grid”, published in the Springer Publisher in the series: Lecture Notes in Computer Science, Vol. 7136. The publication contains 26 articles accompanied by the subject index and a useful glossary of terms. More info about the book is available at the Springer website.

PLGrid Plus project

The Polish Grid Infrastructure was extended during the next project (2011-2015): 'Domain-oriented services and resources of Polish Infrastructure for Supporting Computational Science in the European Research Space – PLGrid Plus“. Its most important task was preparation of specific computing environments – so called domain grids – i.e., solutions, services and extended infrastructure (including software), tailored to the needs of different groups of scientists. These domain-specific solutions were created for 13 groups of users, representing the strategic areas and important topics for the Polish and international science: AstroGrid-PL, HEPGrid, Nanotechnologies, Acoustics, Life Science, Quantum Chemistry and Molecular Physics, Ecology, SynchroGrid, Energy Sector, Bioinformatics, Health Sciences, Materials, and Metallurgy.

The following activities were also realised in the framework of the PLGrid Plus project:

  • extension of the resources available in the PLGrid infrastructure (by ca. 500 TFlops of computing power and ca. 4.4 PBytes of storage capacity),
  • deployment of the Quality of Service system for users by introducing SLA agreement,
  • the design and start-up of support for possible new domain grids,
  • deployment of new infrastructure services,
  • deployment of Cloud infrastructure for users,
  • provision of broad consultancy, training and dissemination offer.

In September 2014, the book titled: 'eScience on Distributed Computing Infrastructure', has been published in the Springer Publisher in the series: Lecture Notes in Computer Science, Vol. 8500. The book describes the experience gained by the PLGrid Plus project partners and the results of scientific work carried out during this project. The publication contains 36 articles accompanied by the subject index and a useful glossary of terms.

PLGrid NG project

Success of the PLGrid Plus project, in particular, the growing popularity of specialized tools and platforms prepared for the members of the first 13 strategic areas of science, led to a rapid increase in demand for related services to researchers in other fields. Therefore, the PLGrid Consortium launched the PLGrid NG project ('New generation domain-specific services in the PL-Grid Infrastructure for Polish Science', 2014-2015), whose primary objective is to implement, within the PLGrid Infrastructure, several dedicated computing services for groups of scientists representing 14 new research fields: Biology, Complex Networks, Computational Chemistry, eBalticGrid, Geoinformatics, Hydrology, Mathematics, Medicine, Metal Processing Technologies, Meteorology, Nuclear Power and CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics), Open Oxides, Personalized Medicine, UNRES.

New domain-specific services cover a wide range of specialties − including provision of the specialized software, mechanisms of data storage, modern platforms integrating new type of tools and specialized databases − and will speed up obtaining scientific results as well as streamline and automate the work of research groups.

PLGrid Consortium

The Polish NGI is managed by the PLGrid Consortium, created in January 2007.

Access to computing resources

Access to the PLGrid Infrastructure enables scientists to increase the scale of the calculations carried out within the scientific research, which would be impossible to achieve with the use of single computers, and contributes to the extension of scientific cooperation at international level. This access is free to:

  • Polish researchers,
  • all those engaged in scientific activities associated with the university or research institute in Poland.

To obtain an account in the PLGrid Infrastructure, enabling access to its computing resources, one should register in the PLGrid Portal. Researchers who do not have Polish citizenship, should first contact the right person from the university or research institute in Poland, they cooperate with, and with his/her help go through the registration process.

All inquiriesconcerning the use ofPLGridInfrastructure should be sent by e-mail to: helpdesk AT plgrid.pl. The users who have already obtained an account in the PLGridPortal can also use theonline helpdesksystem, via the URL: https://helpdesk.plgrid.pl.
